There is no such thing as a Moderate Republican
Maybe there was, once, but not anymore. From Bloomberg:
The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee rejected a proposal to investigate the Bush administration’s program of conducting electronic eavesdropping without warrants, while agreeing to create new congressional panels to increase oversight.
In case you wonder just how evil thing have gotten, to even talk about the President violating the law is helping the Terrorists, according to Republicans. From the same article:
Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts said any inquiry would be detrimental to national security.
Note that among those voting to not investigate Bush’s wanton law breaking is “moderate” Republicans Olympia Snowe and Chuck Hagel- despite the fact that as of Friday, she was saying she would vote for the investigation. When the chips are down, and the issue is important there are no moderates, there are only Republicans. Important issues include things like not investigating Republican Presidents, nominating Republican Justices, and selling US Ports to friends of terrorists. They are the Borg, Resistance is futile. Republicans side with Republicans even when destroying democracy and the rule of law.
This is an imporant point that needs to be driven home again and again- that, to Republicans, loyalty to the party trumps even loyalty to the rule of law or loyalty to the country. An ABC Poll had some recent information on a Hillary vr.s John match up. What’s interesting is the Democratic support for McCain- 57% favorable, with 23% strongly favorable. Among “liberal” Dems, it’s even worse, with 61% favorable and 29% strongly favorable. Compare that to Clinton’s support among Republicans- only 19% favorable, and only 5% strongly favorable.
Might an (undeserved) reputation as a “maverick” and “moderate” help his support among Democrats? Might Clintons (undeserved) reputation as an ultra-liberal hurt her support among Republicans? Remember than in presenting proof of McCain’s Maverick tendancies, you have to be able to show him to be more of a maverick in his party than Clinton is in hers. Remember that Clinton is both pro-war and anti-flag-burning.
Even if it’s not McCain, any Republican presidential candidate at this point is going to distance themselves from Bush- Bush will be the sacrificial lamb and carry the sins of the Republican Party out into the political desert with him. They’ll come up with some new phrase, but what it’ll mean is that they’re a kinder, gentler, compassionate conservative. Moderate, even Maverick. Completely different from the fascist morons we’ve had up to this point. But they will be lying- and I’ll tell you that right now. Because there are no moderate Republicans. Compassionate Conservative is a oxymoron right up there with Jumbo Shrimp, Military Intelligence, and Microsoft Works. It doesn’t matter if it’s John McCain, Olympia Snowe, Chuck Hagel, or George W. Bush.
